Jeff Smith-Driving Instructor County Durham
Hello I’m Jeff Smith a Driving Instructor based in County Durham. Please be patient with me regarding this website, this time I’m the learner and any advice would be appreciated. Many years ago, I have had a passion for high quality, considerate driving, and dedicate myself to teaching my students to drive in a fashion that will give them the skills to remain safe and secure on the roads for all of their driving life, while also keeping the culture of consideration to other road users forever alive in the mind.
I grew up in Newcastle but now live in the rural village of Lanchester. I offer all types of driving lessons in Derwentside and County Durham. Travelling between students, I listen to Radio Two, because it’s what Radio One used to be isn’t it? In my spare time I like fell walking and reading.
As an experienced Driving Instructor, I try to provide a course to suit everyone’s needs, including novice learner driving lessons, refresher driving courses, motorway training, pass plus and extended driving test preparation, as well as theory and hazard perception education which I make available online completely free of charge with any of my courses.
I try to cover all of the needs a student may have from help applying for their provisional driving licence to giving them a login for my free online theory and hazard perception training program, (my students tell me that the online theory training method is so much better than working with CD rom’s as it tracks your progress and repeats work you are failing in) followed by arranging the theory test and then the practical driving test. Finally I am registered for the Pass Plus course to enhance the skills already learnt.
My days are varied, one morning I may be giving driving lessons in Consett to a novice driver, then in the afternoon it could be driving lessons in Stanley for a driver who had previously been banned from driving and in need of passing an extended test, followed in the evening with a Pass Plus night driving lesson in Chester Le Street. The work is so engaging and wide-ranging my enthusiasm never fades.
Having been in the industry as an ADI (Approved Driving Instructor) since 1987, I am proud that all my previous and present students have entrusted me to teach them a necessary life skill, and in so doing I have been privileged in developing a great wealth of experience as a driving instructor. As a result I have encountered every conceivable requirement a pupil might need in their quest for driving independence. Currently I use Renault Clio diesels for training purposes. You can be assured of my patient and professional attitude to your own personal requirements whatever your needs or circumstances.
There is no magic formula for learning to drive, every one learns at their own pace. My function is to make sure no time is wasted during the progression from the novice learner driver to the well practised driver equipped with the skills and confidence to pass the Driving Standards Agency practical driving test.
Several years ago I undertook a classroom teaching course at Derwentside College gaining the 7307 teaching certificate in adult education. The strategies, tactics and diplomacy I gained during my time at the college have given me many valuable aids in coaching even the most anxious students.
Over the past 30 years I have always been graded in the two highest categories of instructional ability. In 2016 I was assessed by the DVSA as A Grade which is the Highest grade instructor availble.
“It’s all about success.” Most of my new students have been referred to me by former clients; recommendation is always the best way to acquire new customers. For me that not only means they have been successful in passing the driving test, but I have also been successful in gaining their trust.
I am not employed by a corporate driving school and you will not see me offering ludicrous cut-price lessons, or any unrealistic offers regarding passing your practical driving test. Which you will find without looking too far. The questions you must ask yourself are: Am I getting good value for money? Does my instructor have a genuine interest in helping me? Will I always have the same instructor? A change of instructor does not help in the continuity of the learning process. When I collect you for your first lesson it’s me you’ll see until I’m taking you to your driving test. I charge a fair hourly rate; I don’t take any time from a lesson for travelling to or from a client.
I use Durham and Hexham Driving test centres for the practical test. The centre I choose for each student is usually determined by the geographical area they live in. If you begin your driving tuition in Consett, Stanley or the surrounding areas, we would use Hexham driving test centre or Durham driving test centre, depending on which you are closest to. Having driving lessons from Chester-Le-Street would lead us to Durham for your practical driving test. In all of my catchment areas the choice of driving test centre would be chosen in a similar way. If a student has a personal choice of test centre this will always be taken into account.
